Specialized Services | Department Information | F.A.Q. | Important Issues |

We have posted some of the typical questions and issues that are regularly answered by our officers.

Q: Civil Complaints
A: The Pennsylvania legal system is divided into two parts. One consists of criminal law, while the other consists of civil law. Each part has its own set of rules and procedures. The police department investigates incidents that arise from a "criminal" nature. However, such thins as property line disputes and landlord-tenant disputes are best handled by a private attorney or civil complaint filed at the District Justice's Office.

Q: What should I do if I have an animal problem?
A: Stray animals are cared for by the Hazelton Animal Shelter. You can call the Police Department to inquire if anyone has lost a pet, however we don’t care for stray animals. If you have lost a pet you may contact the police in case we see it on patrol. Animals should always have a collar with the owners name and phone number.

Continuously barking dogs may be covered under a Butler Township Ordinance. We would recommend attempting to solve the barking dog problem at a "neighborly" fashion rather than by prosecution.

Q: What is the policy on fire and intrusion alarms?
A: Pennsylvania Crimes Code Section 7511, entitled Control of Alarm Devices and Automatic Dialing Devices and a township ordinance have been enacted to prevent false and recurring alarms. According to the section, a person that "owns, uses, or possesses an alarm device or automatic dialing device" may not cause more than three false alarms within a 12 month period. If a prosecution takes place, you may be charged up to $300.

Q: Can I obtain a police report?
A: Accident reports are available for a fee or $15. Reports are only available to those persons involved in a motor vehicle accident, his attorney or insurer and to other government agencies. The department may refuse to furnish a report when there are criminal charges pending against any persons in the accident. (PA Title 75 Section 3751(b)).

Copies of investigation reports are not available to the public.
